Program and Director Celebrate Twenty-five Years
Spearheaded by Gertrude "Googie" Walsh Butler, a staunch mental health advocate and consumer, an advisory committee formed in 1984 to assess Compeer program startup in Buffalo.
The following year Compeer Founder Bernice "Bunny" Skirboll hired Michele Brown as coordinator for the new program which would serve Buffalo and all of Erie County. For the first ten years, Compeer Inc. administered the program and guided its growth.
"Under Michele's leadership, strong dedication, and professionalism, Compeer West grew in Buffalo and become its own agency in 1994," remembers Skirboll. "It has been a great joy and sense of pride for me to watch the tremendous growth, acceptance, and recognition of Compeer of Greater Buffalo under Michele Brown."

Compeer
since 1973
"“COMPEER
has essential attributes needed for people with mental illnesses to
live meaningful lives in the community like everyone else. It
is relatively low cost and utilizes natural rather than paid staff
supports; creates opportunities for equal and reciprocal rather than
hierarchical relationships; activity takes place in the community
rather than the agency; and the interactions can combat negative
beliefs, prejudice, and discrimination. COMPEER was possibly ahead of its time when it was founded more than 35 years ago. The current and future emphasis on recovery and community integrations means ‘COMPEER's time has come.’ ” -- Mark Salzer, Ph.D featured presenter at the first Compeer webinar, April 2009
